I know that our system is far from perfect, but I hadn't realized how much worse it's gotten. I also don't know if I'll see an improvement in my lifetime.
Perhaps two major improvements in one life is too much to expect. When I was young, I got to see the end of Jim Crow. Maybe, just maybe, I'll get to see the end of this hyperpartisanship too.

Jim Crow was removed the same year that I graduated from college, 1965. The highest ranking Naval Officer, a four star Admiral from my class was a black naval officer as well, some 30 years later. Progress I suppose and Civil Rights legislation was "open debate" as I recall.
The simple reason a lot of "closed" stuff comes to the floor nowdays is Congress is too damned lazy to work hard, period.
It seems to currently being a big deal that McConnel will require the Senate to work on Fridays come January. OMG what progress!! I would put a bill on the floor and leave the Senate OPEN for as long as it took to fully debate the issue. Let them sleep on cots on the floor of the Senate, 24/7, 365 and it would not cost us the taxpayers a penny, other than keeping lights on longer!!
